Hegel H300

The flagship integrated amplifier/DAC. The alchemists of old devoted their lives to finding a way to make gold out of stone. As far as we know they never succeeded. However, with the H300, we finally feel that we have. At least, from an audio perspective. On one side, the H300 is a spectacular integrated amplifier. With its 250 watts per channel, it is powerful enough to pair with even the most demanding loudspeakers on the market. Hegel's patented SoundEngine technology ensures completely undistorted and natural sound with a dynamic and powerful bass response. The H300 is, to a large extent, based on Hegel's Reference products rather than its smaller brothers. On the other side, it has 5 digital inputs and this is where the alchemy comes in. Hegel's digital inputs are designed with unique technology that can make your computer, streamer or other digital device sound extremely good. You can take some of the most affordable digital music players on the market, connect them to the H300's digital inputs, and get musical and dynamic sound.

The secret lies in how we receive, treat and re-build these digital signals in the H300's built-in DAC. The digital side of the H300 is also future-proof as you can upgrade it using our "DAC-loop". Our claim is that aside from a good pair of loudspeakers, the H300 may be the only "audiophile" component you need in your system. On the technical side, the H300 uses the hand-matched FET transistors, normally only seen in Hegel's most esoteric power amplifiers. This dramatically reduces, or even eliminates, higher-order harmonic distortion, resulting in more resolution and a smoother sound. It normally requires about 100 transistors to find one perfect pair.

The biggest step forward is the preamplifier stage. The high quality dual-mono construction borrows several ideas from our top of the line pre amplifier. This ensures the lowest possible noise and distortion levels. The H300 uses what we call the Hegel 2 amplifier platform. This platform ensure very good channel separation and low noise levels. Still, all sections in the H300 are designed ground up specifically for this unit and is far superior to any other integrated amplifier from Hegel. The H300 has a wide range of both analog and digital inputs. It has a fixed-level Home Theater input that allows you to integrate it in a Home Theater system. If you are using advanced remote control systems, you can also control it directly through the direct IR inputs on the back panel.

Is the Hegel H300 available in different colours?
The H300 is available in black colour.
Can the H300 be used in a surround sound system?
The H300 has a stereo "Home Theatre" input that can be used with a surround sound system. By selecting Home Theatre from the remote control or from the source selector, the H300 can be used as a power amplifier for the main front speakers of a Home Theatre setup. When selecting the Home Theatre input the volume is automatically faded up to the maximum volume setting of 85, making the H300 a powerful Home Theatre power amplifier.
Does the H300 use an active preamp stage?
The preamp stage of the H300 uses a high quality, active preamp stage, based upon the ideas behind the P30 preamp.
Is the Hegel H300 true balanced?
The balanced inputs of the H300 use true electronically-balanced inputs, as do all Hegel units.
Is the patented SoundEngine amplifier technology used in the Hegel H300?
The H300 uses the new and improved version of the patented Hegel SoundEngine technology, exclusively used by Hegel. The power amplifier section of the H300 is based upon technology from the Hegel H30 power amplifier.
What is the power consumption of the Hegel H300?
Because of the SoundEngine technology used in the H300, there is no need to run a high bias current in the output stage of the amplifier. The H300 will, as all the other Hegel amplifiers, use a minimum of power in standby mode when it is not playing music. The H300 will use about 60W of power in standby mode, the same as a normal light bulb.
What file types will the HD300 support when connected to a computer?
The beauty of it is that the H300 is not the player. Your computer is the player. Any format, any resolution and any file type your computer can play will work through the H300.
Can I stream 24 bit/96 kHz signals or higher from a PC to the H300?
Yes, you can. The H300 streams native 24 bit/96 kHz audio over the USB connection.
What type of units can I connect to the H300?
You can connect any computer that has a true USB output with the ability to supply power through the USB port. This generally covers any computer or laptop on the market today. The coaxial and optical inputs can connect to most products with a similar output, and capability to send out a PCM-coded signal up to 24 bit/192 kHz resolution.
I try to connect the H300 to a MAC computer. Installation seems fine but there is no sound?
On some MAC computers, you may need to go to settings and choose which soundcard you want to use. For the H300, choose the soundcard "TE7022". You can download a quick guide in the left menu
I try to connect the H300 to a computer using Linux Ubuntu. Installation seems fine but there is no sound?
On computers using the Linux Ubuntu operatating system you need to go to settings and choose which soundcard you want to use. The internal or the H300. You can download a quick guide in the left menu.
What are the correct MIDI input/output settings in MAC OSx?
First a short explanation; the input-setting is a setting for USB-recorders such as a USB microphone. The output-setting is a setting for USB-Audio DAC's, such as a Hegel HD2, HD11, HD20, H300 or others. For optimal sound, the output-setting should be set to 24/96. The input-setting is not implemented in the USB-receiver in the Hegel DAC, and you will need to set it to a lower setting (16 bit). Correct MIDI-settings are: input: 16 bit - Output: 24 bit.
Hegel H300 and MAC OSx Lion. Does it work?
Absolutely. However beware that Lion does not necessarily have all drivers pre-installed. You may need to run updates with the DAC plugged in to be able to make use of all functionality. This is especially important if you upgrade to Lion from an older operating system. As a general rule, we do not recommend upgrading to a new operating system until it has been on the market for a few months. We are sorry that we cannot offer general support for using Lion or other operating systems.
